2 – 5 Music Curriculum Overview

UNIS Grade 2 – 5 Music Curriculum is integrated with the IB PYP Planners and progressively develops the Discovery to Grade 12 Music Continuum.

Along with the IB Student Learner Profiles, trans disciplinary skills and attitudes, we aim to facilitate learning in students so that they intrinsically value, appreciate and experience all kinds of music. Skills of beat, rhythm and pitch are developed as students experience music through:

  • movement
  • playing instruments and musical co-operative games,
  • singing
  • listening to each other and recordings

A combination of Kodaly, Orff and Dalcroze music teaching methods are used in the classroom.

Performances throughout the year include:

  • UN Day
  • Assemblies
  • Festive Fundraiser
  • Spring Fair
  • Grade level PACs
  • Grade 5 Graduation

Grade 1 – 3 Choir

Students in Grades 1,2 and 3 have an option to join this lunchtime choir. Students wanting to join this choir commit to the weekly lunchtime rehearsals and sign up with Ms Annalee.

UNIS Music Academy Instrumental Program

Students in Grades 4 have the opportunity during their school day music lessons to learn an instrument for 10 – 12 weeks. Depending on instrumental and teacher availability, we work to provide students with their top three preferred choices.

  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Trumpet
  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Cello

Students in Grade 5 have the opportunity during their school day music lessons to learn an instrument for 10 – 12 weeks. Depending on instrumental and teacher availability, we work to provide students with their top three preferred choices.

  • Guitar
  • Keyboard
  • Percussion

All students can opt to learn an instrument outside of school hours paying a basic tuition fee and instrumental rental through the UNIS Music Academy.

Students in Grades 4 and 5 can further develop their singing and performance skills by joining Singers United. This is a signup procedure through the ES ASAs and students are auditioned. Singers United rehearse on Tuesday afternoons, after school. Performances during the year are sometimes outside school hours and sometimes during. We have a lot of fun!

Students in Grades 4 and 5 can further develop their beginning instrumental skills by joining Beginning/Intermediate Band. To join this band, students need to talk with Ms Sally. It is a continuation of the Grade 4 and 5 Instrumental Program. Students provide their own instruments. The Band rehearses on Thursday mornings, before school. We perform sometimes outside of school hours and sometimes during. We love breakfasts!

Assessment

There are various ways to assess student’s learning in music and to gauge their developmental levels of skill in beat, rhythm and pitch. Active participation and practice in musical activities plays a large role when learning music. Specific assessment criteria and rubrics can be seen under each grade level link.
